Traffic Congestion - A Smart Traffic Management System, has solutions for Vehicle parking.  In a Smart City, each parking space has an Intelligent Parking Meter, which is connected to the Unified Data Center (UDC).   A driver can check the availability of the parking spaces available on his/her Smart Phone and reserve his/her parking space and also pay for it in advance, before even leaving home.  This is done through SPM Smart Phone Applications, which can be downloaded, like any other applications, and are an integral part to ensure the smooth functioning of the Smart Parking Management System.  Through this application, the Parking enforcement authorities also can get information of all parking spaces, its violations and also issue e-tickets, from their application. SPMS can solve all parking problems in urban areas, that we face today.  As last known, the most expensive parking space is in the borough of Manhattan, NYC. It costs US $35K a year, to lease a space for a car.  And this is the price which comes with a condition, that, the owner of the car, must be a resident in that street’s vicinity.  Non-Manhattan residents cannot buy such a space.  Such scenarios occur only because we have parking problems and the resultant negative effects of it.  A SPMS, altogether eliminates all these problems. Generally, today’s Parking systems also create problems for the business owners, the Mom & Pop stores on the streets, the commercial complexes and residential buildings too, in urban areas.  Today’s most parking systems have proven to result in loss of business for these owners who have their retail businesses, with entrances facing the street.  Moreover, for instance in the boroughs of Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn, stories of life long enmity and rivalries just because of a parking space, are plenty. Like a Garden City or an Industrial City or a Green City, Smart City too comes with its own challenges.  In case of a Smart Traffic Management System, one of the challenges is the legal aspect of the privacy issue.  There may be drivers, who have questions about the installation of a sensor in their vehicles, as these sensors can provide all the information from the owner of the car to the location of the car, and also if the vehicle is being driven at that point of time, then its speed and all other data too.   Another challenge for the Smart Traffic Management System being, the Hackers & Terrorist groups.  Amateur or Professional Hackers or Terrorist groups can bring this system to a complete halt.  They can disrupt the entire system or they can also manipulate selectively, may it be the system or a part of it or a specific area, crossroad, street in a city. The City of Amsterdam, has proven that with a Smart Traffic Management System, we can solve the problems of Traffic Congestion and all related to Traffic Congestion and also prevent it from occurring. A STMS can be inter-regional, intra-state, inter-state and National. This can ensure smooth flow of Traffic, not just in the cities, but region, states and nationwide.   It receives information and data from multiple sources and gives one comprehensive solution. All these multiple sources of the sensor in the vehicle, the sensor on the building, the intelligent IP cameras and CCTV cameras, with license plate readers and video encoders, are connected to the Unified Data Center (UDC), through different ways and means, all of which go through a Network.  It is this network, that enables all the information received, from all these multiple sources, which is connected to the UDC.  This is a Network, consisting of ruggedized wires and Ethernet switches, all nicely organized and covered with a hard body material box, like iron or steel.  These boxes are placed on the streets, as we have fire hydrants.  These boxes are almost of the size of a fire hydrant and can be accessed only by the authorities, as in case of Fire Department using the Fire hydrant.  Smart Phones and Social Media play an integral role here, making the interaction between the driver, the city, the state and the National authorities, easier and quicker, in real time. The actual brain of an STMS is the Central Server or the Unified Data Center (UDC), which receives Data from all these multiple sources, and gives One comprehensive solution.  The UDC is capable of analyzing all the Data, understand it, segregate the Data, and put it all on a huge color coded screen, which also has the real time Visual inputs through the Visualization software, thus making it all easily controllable and smooth. The STMS reduces Carbon dioxide (CO2) and Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) emissions in the atmosphere, thus making the air we breathe more cleaner and safer.  This decreases the number of cases of Bronchitis, Acute Asthma, Cardiopulmonary diseases and other Respiratory problems, which are among the major and common health problems caused directly due to CO2 & NO2 emissions due to Traffic Congestion. A Smart Traffic Management System also eliminates wastage of time in Traffic jams, helps increase our overall productivity, saves us hundreds of billions of dollars, drastically improves the quality of life, increases road safety and creates an eco-system which is Life friendly and which respects Life. MONITORING OF VEHICLES & PEDESTRIAN LEVELS TO OPTIMIZE DRIVING & WALKING As in the last article, we discussed about the definition of Smart City, and the components that make one. TRAFFIC CONGESTION is one of the major problems, that aspiring Smart Cities face. Quick Factoids of Traffic Congestion : Traffic Congestion costs us more than US $450 Billion, each year in lost money.  This money can be saved and used for positive, needy and productive purposes.  This amount is equivalent to the GDP of more than 50 countries on earth. By 2030, one third of world’s population, approximately, 2.5 Billion people, is expected to be living in cities. 90 per cent, of Traffic congestion occurs in urban areas. 30 per cent, of Traffic Congestion occurs because of people simply looking for parking space. 25 per cent, of Traffic Congestion is non-recurrent, which is caused by various types of Traffic incidents. Traffic Congestion creates road safety risks, thus, jeopardizing Human Life & Health. Traffic Congestion causes the speed of the vehicles to reduce, which results into vehicles emitting more harmful pollutants in the air.  Mexico city and Beijing have some of the lowest vehicle speeds due to Traffic Congestion, 11 km/hr and 8 km/hr respectively.  This speed reminds us of the times when bullock carts were the only available means of transportation. There are several experiments being conducted, continuously, all over the world, to get completely get rid of the problems that we face today, due to Traffic Congestion and the resultant air pollution, and definitely not the least, Health & Life risks and Money & Time as well. For instance, an experiment is being conducted, where a vehicle, is being worked upon, which has the shape and size of a snow mobile.  It is a two seater automobile, which functions on batteries.  The intelligent part about this vehicle is, that, it runs few meters above the road.  Some might be thinking of the Flying Car, but this is not that.  With this Smart Vehicle, you can expect to see in reality, something very similar to a Star Wars episode.  Until then, our Ideal Smart Options are the vehicles made of Hybrid Technology and Electricity, which runs on batteries.  Governments can play a significant role here. Detection of rubbish levels in containers to optimize the trash collection routes: The Upraise of population both in Humans as well as the our Neighboring animals has been seriously posing a threat not only to our natural resources , which are God Gifted to us but also to other aspects, namely Health & Sanitation. Thus with the ever increasing population is also significantly raising a Serious threat to the situation of Waste Generation. I have specifically dedicated this article to the concept of waste management as well as the several new techniques which are optimal in waste recycling. Smart Waste Management, to most of us would generally & usually mean, to collect and disseminate our everyday waste and refuse materials that the Garbage man comes to our house for pick up. But frankly speaking this concept actually means much more, than we assume and presume. Waste management is not only exclusive of the above definition but also inclusive of other aspects and activities.  A Waste Management System includes all the stages right from that of the collection of our waste by the pickup truck to the Recycling of the Waste. A Waste Management System would also include the following list of activities which are mentioned below, this being apart from the above mentioned Waste Pick up and Recycling: (i)Regulation, monitoring and controlling the Collection of Waste, efficient & speedy transportation of the Waste to the Recycling Units (ii)Prevention of Waste from spilling all over during its transportation to the Recycling Units, it also includes speedy transportation of the waste to these Recycling units so that they don’t bother the Usual Traffic conditions during the peak hours. (iii)Proper storage & maintaining facilities / amenities, which are mandatory required to be observed at these Garbage Recycling Units so as to prevent the spread of epidemics, which could cause a treat to personnel who are employed in such places.
